What is PEMF?  What are the benefits?

At Tools for Wellness we look for therapies that help our customers LIVE SMARTER®.  PEMF therapy has been used for many years, primarily in health/clinical settings, but the last decade it’s grown in popularity due to its whole body benefits.

We’ll dive into what pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) are and the research about the benefits. If you have any concerns about the use of PEMF we encourage you to speak with your helth care professional.  Statements have not been evaluated by the FDA, this article is not medical advice, and it is not meant to diagnose or treat any condition.

Have you ever thought “I need a recharge!”…  then this is going to make perfect sense.  Our bodies are energy tools and need to be recharged.  We loose ‘voltage’ just like a battery and need something to aid in recharging our batteries.  It makes sense if you think about it: Our bodies use electrical pulses to function – it’s why pacemakers and heart defibrillators work.

PEMF therapy is a tool that can help mimic the natural recharging mechanism by sending low-level electromagnetic pulses through our bodies to activate our natural repair processes.  The cool thing about this therapy is how it reacts with our bodies.  PEMF therapy is able to pass completely through the body and can reach cells, tissue, organs and even bone without being changed or absorbed and can offer a non-invasive way to support wellness.

There are many benefits to a regular PEMF therapy sessions.  There are literally thousands of studies showing the benefits of PEMF Therapy.  Research by NASA and other bodies has found that PEMF therapy can aide and deliver benefits to include:

  • Better circulation
  • Pain reduction
  • Improved muscle relaxation and performance
  • Decreased inflammation and swelling
  • Improved oxygenation in tissue
  • Enhanced cellular repair and recovery
  • Improved immune system
  • Better sleep

A leading study on PEMF therapy and in conjunction with NASA was lead by Dr. Thomas Goodwin PhD.  This 4 year study found that PEMF therapy compared to other aspects such as static magnets and LED’s had the best effect in the healing and regeneration of cells etc.   Dr. Goodwins team to look closer at the frequency, intensity’s, and waveform’s associated with PEMF .  Spending over 3.5 million dollars to look close into pulsed electromagnetic fields and PEMF therapy over a 4 year period, this study was ‘Landmark’ in proving PEMF therapy works and improves the body’s health and wellbeing.

Lower back pain is very common issue with human body.  It’s reference that evolution left a defect in the lower back and it’s a common condition that between 60% – 80% of the world population will experience low back pain during lifetime, 65% being recurrent a longstanding challenge.  In a study published in the NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE, PEMF Therapy has shown reduce the pain intensity and enhance better functionality in individuals with low back pain.

“Evidence within this systematic review demonstrates that the PEMF therapy seems to be able to relieve the pain and improve functionality in individuals with different low back pain conditions”

WHITE PAPER:  One of the more detailed White Papers written provides thourough and in depth detail on how PEMF effects the body at a cellular level and gives detailed reference to other studies.

PEMF Therapy can provide additional and somewhat surprising benefits.  In an article published by the California Business Journal 5 Surprising benefits include:

  • Non-invasive and drug-free therapy
  • Release chronic pain in the brain
  • Manage stress and tension
  • Control diabetes and cholesterol
  • Help in wound healing

In summary, PEMF therapy has become very popular and is being recommended regularly by medical experts.  The FDA has approved PEMF therapy as a treatment for depression, migraines, non-union fractures, wound healing, discomfort and tissue swelling.

Referenced by the many studies cited, it is clear that PEMF therapy stimulates several aspects of cellular metabolism and activity by increasing the Trans-Membrane Potential (TMP), and flow of ions in the cell membrane, growth factors, tissue repair and healing.  PEMF therapy increases blood circulation in and around damaged tissue, and effectively helps damaged cells heal by bringing more oxygen into the cells

Benefits can be broad and beneficial.  Everyone can benefit from this therapy, whether they are young or old.
