About Verilux

Over half a century ago, a young starving artist named Howard Scott suffered from Iritis, (inflammation of the iris) as he painted at night by a bare light bulb suspended from the ceiling. He pledged that someday he would do something about the dreadful lighting conditions.

In 1956 Scott founded Verilux (Latin for "True Light".) A former Munsell® Color Engineer and famous billboard graphic artist, his mission for Verilux was to manufacture and sell the perfect daylight source. Scott experimented with rare earth phosphers and succeeded by inventing near perfect daylight indoors with his patented true color light fluorescent formula - Trucolite®.

Today, the original philosophies and founding principles have not changed. Why Verilux Full Spectrum Lighting?

Bright indoor lighting created a cultural revolution when it first appeared. Suddenly, you could do things indoors, generally restricted to daylight hours. While this light was bright, researchers later found out that it wasn’t a very good simulation of natural sunlight, and in fact certain light frequencies were lacking.

These discoveries led to a “second generation” of lighting, one that used light frequencies that were the same as sunlight. Standard lighting actually appears yellow when compared to natural spectrum lighting.

Verilux Natural Spectrum light bulbs are the closest replication of natural sunlight available. How OttLite helped Cinderella arrive at the ball

It was a true Cinderella story when photobiologist Dr. John Nash Ott figured out how to bring the brilliance of natural daylight indoors. He was first faced with this challenge when the Walt Disney Company approached him with a proposition: to record the growth of a pumpkin through time-lapse photography. Animators would use this footage to help them create what would become the legendary transformation of a pumpkin into Cinderella's magical carriage.

The task of growing a pumpkin indoors wasn’t an easy one.

Under some lighting conditions, male plants grew, but no females. After adjusting the lighting, females grew, but no males. Following several experiments, Dr. Ott discovered the proper range of light wavelengths to successfully grow the pumpkin indoors. Thanks to Dr. Ott's vision, Cinderella’s story inspires millions to this day, and OttLite continues to bring the advantages of natural daylight indoors.

Dr. Ott’s home run

In the 1970s, a scout for the Cincinnati Reds contacted Dr. Ott about baseball caps. Traditionally, the underside of all players’ caps was yellowish green. Dr. Ott suggested that they change the underside of the caps to gray. This is because a natural reflection of light bounces off the ground. So if a batter holds his head up or a fielder looks up to catch a fly ball, the light will reflect off the underside of the visor. Dr. Ott further explained that this green reflection inhibits energy and hinders performance. So the Reds took Dr. Ott’s advice and changed their visors. Batting averages went up. Team performance improved. That same year, they won the pennant. Was it the change in their caps? No one can say for sure, but nearly every team in baseball has switched to gray on the underside of the caps.

Dr. Ott’s influence is far-reaching

In addition to being known as the father of time-lapse photography, Dr. Ott spent years researching how certain wavelengths of light affect plants, animals and people. He was internationally recognized with the Grand Honours Award from the National Eye Research Foundation, the Jonathan Forman Gold Medal from the Society for Clinical Ecology, a Gold Medal from the Garden Club of America, and was appointed a trustee of the Light and Health Research Council in London.
